“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”
— Martin Luther King, Jr., 1963
My friend Dima is from the Ukraine. He sent out an email to friends with links to resources to help the Ukrainian people. Humanitarian links.
I wanted to help. I’ve asked you to join me in supporting political campaigns. Now I’m asking you to join me to support humanitarian ones.
The attack on Ukraine will shape the world we live in. Because what happens in the Ukraine does impact US domestic politics.
And while I need to call attention to the racism people are facing trying to flee the Ukraine — we must still fight for the values of democracy, freedom, and the rule of law. Even if imperfectly applied. Two wrongs don’t make a right.
We need to learn from our mistakes and fight for what’s right against both authoritarianism and racism. That’s how we build the world we want.
I expect the 2020s to just keeping on being the 2020s. Times our children will ask about and, rightly, judge our actions as a test of our values. But in this exhausting experience there is an opportunity to lead and actually change the world for better.
I’m not Ukrainian. But I support them.
I believe in justice and freedom in the US, in the Ukraine, and around the world. I believe in our mutuality.
